The Future of Queen Victoria Park and Queen Victoria Place

Our community is at a crossroads.

The Government of Ontario and the Niagara Parks Commission are currently seeking proposals to lease a significant portion of the remaining undeveloped green space in Queen Victoria Park for up to 49 years to build a new major visitor attraction, potentially including a large-scale ferris wheel overlooking Niagara Falls.

While tourism is vital to our local economy, I do not believe we should sacrifice one of our most treasured public green spaces for a private commercial development.

The proposal identifies the park’s primary undeveloped green space as the preferred location for a second observation wheel and would commit this land to a private operator until as late as 2080. Once this space is developed, it is unlikely that future generations will ever have the opportunity to reclaim it in its current form.

Queen Victoria Park is more than a development opportunity—it is part of the natural and cultural landscape that makes Niagara Falls one of the world’s most iconic destinations. Visitors come here to experience the beauty of the Falls, the gardens, the open vistas, and the public spaces that belong to everyone.

We can continue to grow our tourism economy without paving over irreplaceable parkland. We should be investing in attractions that complement and preserve our natural heritage, not replace it.

June 23rd is the deadline for developers to submit bids. I encourage residents to stay informed, make their voices heard, and participate in the conversation about the future of Queen Victoria Park.
